It has been discovered that some horses were allowed to be with the general population where I board that could possible have dryland distemper or pigeon fever. I haven't gotten a whole lot of information in regards to the situation and so i am not clear on whats going on but all of the horses have been exposed and for over two months that I know of. I have been told that it can take a little while for symptoms to show. I am very worried and I feel awful for putting my horses in such an awful situation.

Right now I don't want to move them until I can be sure they won't take it with them if they already have it..........i am just so worried :( .

Hugs to you! I am sure you are worried sick
Do not blame yourself, it is your BO's responcibility to ensure your horses health by not introducing infected horses :( How can it be your fault?

How did you come to find out? and let us know when you get more info..will be following closely and saying prayers.

An email was sent out by one of the boarders to everyone telling them that a case of pigeon fever had been reported. I am not sure whose horse it is or where this horse has been. Words cannot describe how upset i am and at this point I wait and pray that my horses stay healthy.

I keep reading the same thing on this and it just upsets me more. I just want to give these people a piece of my mind. They never notified the BO and so there was no chance to quarantine the horses that got sick. I don't even know for sure if this is all true or just people with over active imaginations. I told my husband I didn't want to panic, but he said that I already was and that I had a reason to. This is awful..... :( I wanted to take my horses out of this place because of the political absurdity going on. I feel trapped, I hate that place.

I would be so upset too...I hope that all goes well with your horses. If it was done intentionally, introducing an infected horse to others like that, I don't understand people that put other's delicate posessions in harms way...there is just no excuse for it...

Oh, this sounds awful, although I must admit, I'm not familiar with pigeon fever, guess I'd better go google on it to find out what it is.

I hope your horses are OK - is there any affordable way to test if they're carrying the antibodies for it?

Well it turns out that a horse does have dryland distemper and so now it is a wait and see what happens. I was told that the best thing to do is check their temperature daily for a bit, so I decided to keep a record of temps so I can see differences. The horse that is sick is quarantined now but it has been sick for two months and so everyone is exposed  . I am going to find out how long I need to wait till I can move them without spreading this. I will keep you all updated :( .

I wanted to give an update. The sick horse is getting worse and to add to this poor girl's problems, there will be some major construction going on by her stall and her owners won't move her. It was suggested to move her to another spot and I suggested we move the portable round pen to a quieter place. Well the owner sent me a nasty e-mail for my suggestion and thought it important to point out only one horse was sick. I don't take these things personal anymore but geeze, she doesn't turn her horses out and doesn't clean their stalls so them getting this is no surprise. She also felt it was ok to keep her sick horses a secret, she should be apologizing for exposing all of our horses.

So far my horses are doing fine and show no signs. There is another horse who has some abcessing but it is not confirmed to be the same thing. I will be glad when we get our first freeze and the flies finally die out. The boarding place I had found fell through so I am back to looking for a place.

It is hard to believe the barn owner/manager isn't doing something about it. He/she should be forcing the horse owners to clean the stall &/or move it away from the general population. I hope you are able to move to a better barn soon.

Wow. The stupidity of some people...it's unbelievable. I hope you can get to a better barn asap...and you might even want to check with the local sheriff...see if her keeping that a secret is even legal. I don't know if it will be or not, but it's always worth a shot.

Some people's kids  It sounds to me like she has a horse just to say she has a horse. Forget about really taking care of it. So sorry you had to go through all this. My BO won't take a horse (unless he knows EXACTLY where it is coming from) unless it's quarantined for 6 weeks. That way we don't have any problems with strangles or this type of thing.

This is just unacceptable! The person who's horse is sick should pay for all vet bills if your horses or any other horses get sick.

Some people just don't care what happens to other people's horses, and that is not acceptable as far as I am concerned.

Sure hope your horses stay healthy, praying for them.

I'm happy to hear things are going well for your horse so far. My barn had an "outbreak" of tapeworm a few months ago. Most of the boarders are diligent in their care of the horses, but there is always one.....Our BO let everyone know that it happened, a vet suggested all the horses get a three time four week rotation of Equimax. Now, I buy all my wormer in January for the year, so had to order more. So long story, short, I had to fork out almost $90 to make sure my boys were covered, as well as some at my barn that had 4-5 horses, do the math (I only have three). Our BO is great, but sometimes, you can't know what the other boarders are doing or not. I fault the person that boards and doesn't keep her/his animals up to date on the norm. Why have them if you're not going to take care of them?
