As you know I live in Mid Mo. My husband told me that at 3 am this morning, a horse trailer carrying 40 horses was in an accident on I44. Brian said it was a mess, the interstate was closed down, horses running around the interstate. They were on their way to slaughter house in Illinois. Ok, I know this can be a heated topic so let me state to slaughter or not to slaughter is not the topic of this post. It was a terrible accident, 12 horses died. Around 30 are being treated for wounds and are in custody of the humane society. They are going to try to find them homes and adopt them out but I am not sure if they will be able to do that or not.
Im posting a link to Fox 2 news, I will try to post it correctly so I dont get in trouble with the mod. Look for the "Rescued Horses Face the Slaughter House" story.

Ok, there was a link to the Humane Society on the Fox website. Im going to attempt a copy and paste its more informative than I can be.

September 27, 2006 - 42 horses in a trailer bound for DeKalb, IL slaughter house were involved in accident on Highway I-44 early this morning near St. Clair, Missouri. At 3:15 a.m. Incident Commander and Longmeadow Rescue Ranch Director Earlene Cole received a call from the Franklin County Sheriff’s office about the overturned trailer. Cole immediately directed a team of veterinarians and rescue personnel who arrived on the scene shortly after 4 a.m.

26 horses were rescued alive and taken to St. Clair Saddle Club for triage and assessment. 7 horses died on the scene as a result of the accident and 9 seriously injured horses were humanely euthanized at the direction of the veterinarian on the scene.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol has asked the Humane Society of Missouri and its Longmeadow Rescue Ranch to care for the surviving horses until a permanent determination can be made. The Humane Society is seeking custody of the horses.

The Humane Society of Missouri and its Longmeadow Rescue Ranch have been designated as first responders in emergencies and disasters involving animals. Longmeadow, located in Union, Missouri, and operated by the Humane Society of Missouri, is one of the largest horse and farm rescue and rehabilitation facilities in the United States.

Make a donation to help defer the costs of this rescue and the Humane Society’s efforts to obtain custody of these animals.

That tells the story a little better than I can.

Maybe they had some kind of intervention, and will be better off in the end.

Of course, I don't know the details of the accident, but must say I have on many occassions seen people towing horse trailers, etc. driving really fast. When I am driving my regular vehicle probably going over the limit being past buy someone towing I get the shivers. Tractor trailors go pretty fast, but they are better set up to drive a load.

Hope everything works for the best

OMG, what a tragedy! I'm glad the horses that survived now have a fighting chance at life again...
I didn't see anything about any people hurt,,, hope that didn't happen either...

I know from experience that alot of 18 wheeler trucks drive fast and careless (dont want to offend anyone who might drive a truck for a living) and in my opinion...they are taking animals to their death..so what...who cares...ugh..a sore subject for me for sure..

I'm just glad some made it out ok...

I'm looking at a newspaper photo...can't scan it  but here's what the caption reads:

HORSES RESCUED FROM CRASH

Cass Williams, 12, comforts one of about 26 horses brought to the St. Clair Saddle Club in St. Clair, Mo., following an accident early yesterday on Interstate 44 that killed 16 horses on their way to a slaughterhouse. The rescued horses were brought to an arena and treated by area veterinarians and volunteers including Cass and her family, who own nine horses of their own. "I want her so bad," said Cass, hoping to add to her family's herd. At the makeshift triage center, horses were spray-painted with symbols to indicate which veterinarian treated the animal.

At least this means that hopefully, the remaining horses will be adopted out...I don't think they'd have vets treat them if they were going back to the slaughter house.

I am following up on this story. I am posting a link to the Humane Society. They show each of the twenty six horses that survived the accident and tell a little about each.

Wow, looks like for some of them they got lucky. I can't imagine horse lovers not raising a big huge stink about the destination. And some are yearlings? Wonder where they came from?

I can't even begin to imagine the horror. At least the 16 who perished are at peace now and I truly hope the survivors are able to find loving homes. So sad. :(

Thanks Bearcat. I was wanting to post that link, but I was afraid of getting in trouble iwth the MOD, I have in the past. :o
I wonder if they let you go see the horses. They are about an hours drive from here. ALthough I see many horses I like in there, I really think Bazonka Donk is interesting.
If they get custody of the horses, then they will put them up for adoption.
I will continue to watch the story.
