What on earth would I do with a pony? Though Sundance is "sold", the details of the sale are not fully worked out. In part, the buyer would like to trade me a pony. I don't know what kind of pony it is. It's kind of big for a pony though I think still under 14hh. The pony is 15, pretty much dead broke and would be great for kids but I'm too big to ride her. I'm being told I should get her as a companion, but if I were going to get a companion horse, I'd imagine I could get one for free. I'm only allowed two horses on my property and I feel like they should both be rideable by an adult. I don't have any kids.
What on earth would I do with a pony? What would a kid-safe pony normally sell for? She bought this one for $500 which seems like a steal so I've wondered if I could flip the pony for $1000 or so?
Mostly it just seems like a stupid idea though.

Kayla,
One of my horses is only 13.3 hands (technically a pony) and yes she's small, but really a great deal of fun to ride :D I'm short and she's the only horse I have that I don't have to use a mounting block to get on :D It's also nice to have a smaller horse for timid riders and young folks who want to ride. Plus she's awfullly cute to have around :)

A pony is worth as much as a person is willing to pay for them. I would get more information on the pony such as the breed, is he/she registered, how old, any health problems, has the pony ever foundered (ponies founder much more easily than a horse, many can not be on pasture at all), can you watch her being ridden...
Also, many 14 hand horses are big enough for an adult. If the pony is healthy & sturdy enough you may well be able to ride him.

The pony owner rode her last night. She looked kind of stupid sitting on her, but the pony seemed to bear her weight with no problem. She doesn't have a saddle that fits her and I wouldn't want to get on her bareback at this point. I'm 5'5" and weigh 145. Do you think I'd kill a pony?
Not much medical history. Becky hasn't had the pony for more than maybe 3 months. I doubt the pony is registered but I should be able to find out the breed. She's not a Shetland, POAs always look like small horses to me and she seems small compared to other POAs I've seen. She's red roan but that probably doesn't mean much. In some small way, she looks appy but I don't think that means much either.
I will try to get more info.

Kayla,
Sugar Spot is the little one. If you go back a few threads I posted a picture of her. She is the Spotted Saddle Horse. The thread is call "Horse pictures at Last". I'm 5'3 and 135 lbs and she carries me just fine :)

Terry, I hope you feel better!
Zahra is only a little over 14hh (14.2 at most) but since she's arab, she wouldn't be considered to be a pony. She has no problem with my weight, but I don't know if a big man could ride her.
I don't know how big the pony is -- maybe 13hh to 13.2? She's definitely smaller than my mare.

When I was a kid, I rode a Welsh-cross pony, I rode him for the time I was 3' until I was about 5'5, he was AWESOME.
Well-broke ponies sell pretty well, I think, if they're in good health. If they're small, it's more difficult to find an experienced person that is small enough to ride/train them, so they can be a little ornery. If this pony really is "all that", he'd be awesome!

We have an appy pony... he's 13.2 hands tall. He's the best all around horse we have! Anyone can ride him - adults, kids, people with fear... he's the best. I don't think the size of the body is what counts... it's the size of the heart.
I'm 5'4" and when I was up to 155 lbs... he still carried me just fine. I have a friend who is 5'7" who rides him around...
If the horse/pony has no health problems and it's a good match... why not??

I'm going to take a better look at the pony over the weekend. Thanks all!
